The St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City moves 12,600 cubic metres of water per second past 400 years of European settlement, Indigenous navigation routes that predate Champlain's arrival, and the only UNESCO World Heritage riverside urban district in North America.
The 270-kilometre corridor served as New France's economic spine from 1608, and today a river cruise Montreal to Quebec City traces the same channel that carried fur-trade canoes, Royal Navy frigates, and timber rafts longer than city blocks.
The waterway itself is a drowned valley — the Champlain Sea flooded the basin 13,000 years ago, leaving marine clay deposits that now anchor the riverside agriculture visible from every deck. Cruise vessels depart from Montreal's Old Port, passing beneath the Jacques-Cartier and Pierre Laporte bridges before entering the freshwater estuary zone where the river widens to five kilometres. Montmorency Falls appears 13 kilometres upstream from Quebec City, its 83-metre drop visible from the water as a white plume against Precambrian bedrock. The falls discharge 35,000 litres per second during spring melt, and Samuel de Champlain named them in 1613 after Henri II, Duke of Montmorency, who never saw the cascade.
Quebec City's Lower Town harbours the narrowest point of the navigable seaway — Cap Diamant's 98-metre promontory forced Champlain to build his Habitation at its base, and the fortified cliff became the only walled city north of Mexico still standing. The river here is tidal, salt-wedge stratified, and deep enough that oceangoing vessels dock at the Port of Quebec's Pointe-à-Carcy terminals year-round. Between Montreal and Quebec lie Sorel-Tracy, where the Richelieu River meets the St. Lawrence, and Trois-Rivières, founded in 1634 at the delta of the Saint-Maurice River, whose three channels gave the city its name.
St. Lawrence River tours operate from May through October, when the seaway is ice-free and daylight extends past 20:00 in midsummer. The Canadian Coast Guard maintains the navigation channel at a minimum depth of 11.3 metres, and the river's flow reverses twice daily below Trois-Rivières as Atlantic tides push upstream. This hydraulic complexity means that no two sailings trace identical conditions — current, light, and the frequency of lake freighters passing under the Île d'Orléans bridge all vary. The riverbanks preserve 17th-century seigneurial land divisions, their narrow lots still visible as property lines radiating from the water, a cadastral fossil of feudal Quebec that modern highways and rail lines follow without deviation.
